Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is from the Greek gyne (woman) and mastos (breast). Gynecomastia is the name given the condition of abnormally large breasts on men. This is a common condition in adolescent boys and disappears as adolescence ends 90% of the time. For the other 10% of the population, gynecomastia remains a problem. Gynecomastia is the swelling of breast tissue in boys or men sometimes caused by a hormonal imbalance. The breast tissue usually is less than one and one half inches across in size and is located under the nipple. Gynecomastia may be present on one or both sides and may also make the breasts feel tender.
Possible Causes of Gynecomastia
There are several possible causes of gynecomastia:

Gynecomastia may resolve itself in some cases or be treated with medications to balance hormone levels. Surgery is indicated in other cases. There are usually two types of procedures required for successful male breast reduction: liposuction and removal of the glandular tissue of the breast.
Liposuction removes breast fat but not the breast itself. In a mastectomy, the surgeon removes the breast gland tissue.
Gynecomastia is not a serious health problem, but it is difficult to cope emotionally for men. Shame, humiliation, and embarrassment are common feelings shared by these men. A man or boy has terrible feelings of anxiety when dealing with everyday life. Such a simple activity as swimming, for instance, becomes a nightmare of being taunted; some men and boys learn to hate their own bodies.
