Plastic Surgery in the UK

In 2009, cosmetic breast surgery in the UK grew by 80% - in men. One big trend in cosmetic plastic surgery in the UK is the reduction in the so-called man-boobs. Then again, the hard numbers were fairly low: 581 such male breast reduction operations in 2009, up from 323 in 2008, but a mere five years ago, only 22 such operations were performed.

In 2009, approximately 36,500 plastic surgery procedures took place in the UK, an increase of nearly 7% from 2008. Breast augmentation was the number one procedure, followed by eyelid surgery. Face and neck lifts dropped by nearly 7% from 2008 to 2009. Whether this is attributable to economic concerns, or whether it is because minimally invasive procedures like injection of Botox and line fillers work so well is not clear. Abdominoplasty numbers dropped too. It is one of the more invasive and expensive cosmetic surgery procedures.

The numbers that shot up the most were for a brow lifts, which increased by nearly 43% from 2008 to 2009. Rhinoplasty was the runner-up in terms of percent increase over a one-year period, with a 25% increase from 2008 to 2009.

But there are plenty of new trends in cosmetic plastic surgery in the UK that are quite different from what people normally think of when they think of things like face lifts, rhinoplasty, and breast augmentation.

The rise in "lunch hour procedures" has been staggering, and not just with procedures like Botox, but "nonsurgical" rhinoplasty, and breast enhancement with Macrolane injections.

The lunch hour nose job is accomplished in about 15 minutes with injectable fillers like Juvederm or Restylane. While it can't make a nose smaller, it can make it look far straighter, and it can build up a nose bridge that the patient feels is too flat. The cosmetic doctor injects the filler into the patient's nose at strategically chosen spots, and then massages the filler into place, gently changing the shape of the nose.

Another reason for the rise in lunch hour cosmetic procedures is the influence of a fairly recent cosmetic surgery demographic: men. Two very popular procedures among men are Botox for facial rejuvenation (sometimes jokingly called "Boytox") and Botox to curb excessive sweating. There is no question about it: in the UK as with many other places on the globe, minimally invasive procedures are the hottest things going when it comes to cosmetic procedures. As the techniques improve and technolgies mature, minimally invasive procedures may continue to rule for the foreseeable future.
